Is this the end of the long-haul struggle? Air New Zealand finally brings beds to Economy

For decades, the luxury of a lie-flat bed has been exclusive to those in the forward cabins of First Class and Business Class, leaving those of us in the rear to navigate the endurance test of ultra-long-haul travel from a seated or semi-tilted position.

However, Air New Zealand is poised to disrupt this long-standing aviation hierarchy with the official debut of Skynest. Economy and Premium Economy passengers can now forget the woe of the despised middle seat (at least for a few hours) as Air New Zealand is putting triple-stacked bunk beds on its newest jets.

The first Skynest bed pods will be available to book online from May 18, and set to take flight in November 2026 aboard the airline's new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, this world-first innovation introduces six bunk-style sleep pods positioned between the Economy and Premium Economy cabins. Not merely an incremental upgrade for Economy Passengers; this could be a fundamental shift in how the aviation industry approaches the wellbeing of Economy passengers on long haul flights.

The Architecture of Sleep in Economy Class

Skynest Sleep Pods in Economy Class: Air New Zealand

Developed over five years and rigorous testing with more than 200 customers, the Air New Zealand Skynest structure is an exercise in space-efficient, and affordable luxury. Arranged in a distinctive "V" configuration, the six pods provide a private and rather intimate enclave that extends beyond the standard Economy seat. Each bed pod or 'nest' measures approximately 203cm in length (accommodating heights of up to 6'7"). Coming in at approximately 58cm or 2 feet at its widest point, the bed pod then tapers slightly toward the feet to maximise the aircraft’s footprint.

The Economy Class sleeping pods or 'nests' are equipped with full-length mattresses and high-quality linens, complemented by ambient lighting designed to mirror natural circadian rhythms—shifting from soft hues to aid rest to a gradual "sunrise" at the conclusion of the session. Beyond the physical bed, each pod features:

  • Privacy Curtains: A heavy-duty fabric curtain ensures a visual and acoustic barrier from the main Economy cabin.
  • First Class Comfort: Each Skynest pod is fitted with a full-size pillow, crisp sheets, and a blanket, all refreshed between each session.
  • Climate Control: Each pod will have individual ventilation nozzles with cooling technology.
  • Connectivity: Dedicated USB charging ports and personal reading lights will also be available in the bed pods.
  • Well Timed Rest: All 4-hour sleep sessions are planned outside meal service and one session can be booked per passenger, per flight.
  • Safety Features: Integrated seatbelts for use during unexpected turbulence and a crew call button for immediate assistance.
  • Accessibility: With three sleep pods stacked, accessibility may be limited - bottom bunks are floor level, however, the middle and upper pods require a degree of physical agility to access using several small central steps.

The Guest Experience

Skynest Sleep Pods in Economy Class: Air New Zealand

Air New Zealand has curated the Skynest experience to be more than just a place to lie down; it is a structured 4-hour rest and wellness ritual. Just one four-hour long Skynest session can be booked per passenger, per flight, for those flying in both Economy and Premium Economy Class.

To maintain the highest standards of hygiene and comfort, the airline has implemented a strict 30-minute transition period between sessions. During this window, the cabin crew performs a full linen change and sanitisation of the pod, ensuring each "nester" enters a pristine and refreshed sleeping environment. Also to ensure high standards of hygiene, snacks and food are not permitted into the pods, guests are only allowed to bring water should they need it.

To ensure a seamless experience between rest and dining, Skynest sleep sessions are strategically scheduled around the aircraft's primary service, with the first four-hour block (Session A) commencing immediately after the initial meal and the second (Session B) following a full bedding refresh by the crew. This timing allows travellers to enjoy their meals before or after their designated sleep window, with the final meal service occurring once the second session concludes. Passengers will receive reminders of their scheduled Skynest slot via their inflight entertainment screens at both the 30-minute and five-minute before marks, and cabin crew will remain on hand to personally escort guests who might miss these notifications. While session start times may shift slightly due to operational requirements or due to turbulence for example, the structured nature of the "nest" ensures a rhythmic and refreshed arrival without compromising on the signature onboard culinary experience.

Skynest sleepers are given an amenities kit which includes ear plugs, a sleep mask and a dental kit

To maintain the tranquil atmosphere of the shared sanctuary in the sky, the Skynest is designated as a zone of silence and calm where all personal devices must be switched to silent mode to eliminate disruptive notifications. Should you choose to unwind with a podcast or a film on your own device, the use of headphones is required. This commitment to a hushed environment allows every guest to fully immerse themselves in the restorative experience.

When your four hour sleep session comes to an end, the pod lights will gently illuminate approximately 5 minutes before the end of your session. Should you miss this cue, the Air New Zealand staff will gently notify you that your rest time is coming to an end.

Guests who add a Skynest session to their booking receive a signature "Nestcessities" kit, featuring an eye mask, earplugs, socks, a dental kit, and therapeutic skincare and handcare from the premium New Zealand brand, Aotea. The Skynest guide requires all guests to remove their shoes before entering the pod, and suggests the use of fresh socks - which are included in the Nestcessities amenity kit.

Pricing for these four-hour sleep windows is expected to start from approximately $495 NZD per booking. Passengers are limited to one session per flight to ensure fair access.

Changing the Limitations of Economy Class

Standard Economy Seats: Air New Zealand

Under the leadership of Chief Executive Nikhil Ravishankar, the launch of Skynest is a direct response to New Zealand’s unique geographical isolation. "For a country as remote as New Zealand, the journey matters," Ravishankar noted, emphasising that the future of international tourism depends on making ultra-long-haul travel more manageable, regardless of Class.

With the Skynest, Air New Zealand are offering passengers a mid-point option between the standard Economy seat, the more generous Premium Economy seats and the high-premium Business Premier Luxe suites, Air New Zealand is cementing its reputation as a global leader in aviation innovation, proving that even in the most crowded cabin, there is always room for a more thoughtful design.

The Skynest will be available to book online from May 18, for select ultra long-haul flights between New York and Auckland from November 2026.
