Saudi Arabia may be best known for its magnificent historic sites and sweeping desert-scapes, but there’s plenty more unexpected fun to have across the Kingdom. Foodies will love the world-class dining and toffee-like dates, while outdoor adventurers can scale mountains or dive toward mysterious shipwrecks and stunning coral reefs. Whether you’re travelling solo, with friends or as a family, these are just some of the top things to do in Saudi Arabia.

1. Take a tour of ancient Hegra

One of Saudi Arabia’s most unique experiences, the remarkable archaeological site of Hegra (also called Madain Saleh) is the ruins of an ancient Nabataean city that dates back 2,000 years. A tour of the historic site typically includes a stop at the Hijaz Railway Museum, where you’ll see the remains of an early 1900s railway, before reaching Jabal Ithlib, where you can view the diwan – a large room carved into the mountain’s rocks. There are two more sites where ancient tombs are clustered, and finally, the colossal, 22m-tall Tomb of Lihyan, known as Qasr Al Farid (The Lonely Castle).

2. Try some of the world’s best dates in Medina

Saudi is known across the world for its dates, which are something special – if you’ve never tasted one before, you’re in for a treat. A symbol of hospitality, and often served with a cup of coffee, you’ll no doubt be offered plenty throughout your stay. Plain, stuffed with pistachio, roasted almond or candied orange peel, they’re all delicious. Visit Souq Al Tumor, Medina’s (also known as Madinah) famous date market, where you’ll find more than 150 kinds of dates on sale, including (arguably the best) Ajwa and Medjool varieties. If your trip allows, visit between August and November when the dates are freshly harvested.

3. Shop till you drop in Jeddah’s souqs

The old town of Jeddah has been a trading hub since ancient times, so it’s fitting that Al Balad is still home to an array of traditional souqs. Here you can wander past street food stalls, pick up snacks, chat with vendors, take pictures (with permission), and soak up the vibrant, bustling atmosphere. And if you’re in the market for authentic souvenirs, you’ve come to the perfect place – antiques, handicrafts, leather sandals, jewellery, rugs, and homewares are among the treasures you can pick up here. Bargaining is expected but always be respectful.

4. Camp among the dunes in the Saudi desert

Craving some outdoor adventure? Plan a desert camping trip. An evening spent around a campfire followed by a night under the bright stars in deep desert silence does anyone’s soul a world of good.

There are plenty of places where camping is permitted across the Kingdom, but one of the most thrilling is in AlUla, where you can sleep near incredible rock formations and canyons. There are two authorised sites for independent camping, and you can find details of both locations here. If you’d prefer to go with a tour operator, several options operate desert safari trips to established campsites a short drive away from Riyadh or Jeddah. These excursions usually include camel riding, dune bashing, and other fun activities, plus a traditional barbecue – a particularly good idea if you’re travelling with kids.

5. Marvel at the Jubbah rock carvings

It’s a journey back in time to Jabal Umm Sinman in Jubbah, where you can see some of the world’s most incredible Neolithic rock art. The site spans 39 sq km and holds inscriptions and petroglyphs carved deep into the stone cliff faces. Dating back almost 10,000 years, they depict local animals and people in scenes that offer a glimpse into the lives and culture of those who lived here long ago. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this amazing outdoor museum can be found approximately an hour’s drive northwest of Hail.

6. Scuba dive in Yanbu’s clear waters

Head to the Red Sea coast of western Saudi Arabia for the scuba diving adventure of a lifetime. Yanbu is said to be the Kingdom’s diving capital and it’s easy to see why. Along with the vibrant coral reefs, beautiful marine life, and atmospheric shipwrecks, divers rave about the incredible visibility – the waters are so clear you can sometimes even see the sea floor from above the waves. Some of Yanbu’s most popular sites include the Iona Wreck, Nemo Garden, Seven Sister Reef, and Abo Qalawa.

7. Eat the freshest seafood in the Kingdom

One of Saudi’s top foodie experiences is Jeddah’s historic Central Fish Market, a city institution where you can buy and eat fresh fish and seafood (often from the catch that morning) on the spot. Choose from one of the many stalls selling everything from red grouper to calamari and lobster – anything caught locally will be marked “baladi.” Then take it to the prepping zone where it will be cleaned and peeled or filleted for you. If you’re ready to eat, bring your purchase directly to the on-site restaurant for it to be grilled or fried as you prefer and then tuck right in.

8. See the capital from above at the Sky Bridge

It’s the ultimate pinch-yourself Riyadh experience – seeing the whole city from an incredible height of 302m. Sky Bridge is a long viewing platform on the 99th floor of the Kingdom Centre (the huge, bottle-opener-shaped building that you’ll probably spot as soon as you arrive in the capital). Head to the top and take your time checking out the incredible views of the Riyadh skyline through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. At sunset, and after dark when the city’s lights are sparkling below, are the best times to go although also the most crowded.

9. Have fun with the whole family at Six Flags Qiddiya

After all the excitement and build-up, the wait is finally over and Six Flags Qiddiya is welcoming thrill-chasing families to one of the world's top theme parks, right here in Qiddiya City. The city is a key part of Vision 2030 and has received significant investment to ensure it becomes a centre of family fun and the joy of play. One of the key openings is Six Flags, one of the most famous and iconic theme-park brands in the world.

This sprawling theme park features six immersive zones, each packed with adrenaline-pumping rides, family-friendly experiences, and record-breaking attractions. There's something fun for every age group, from toddlers to teens, and it's already proven to be a massive hit with Saudi families. Factor in a host of great restaurants and a shopping district, and it's no wonder this is fast becoming the ideal day out – all just a short trip from Riyadh.

10. Climb Al Qarah Mountain for spectacular views

The Eastern Province has some of Saudi Arabia’s most spectacular outdoor experiences and a hike to the top of Al Qarah Mountain is not to be missed. It’s not a very strenuous climb, and once you get to the top, you’ll be rewarded with knock-out views of the lush Al Ahsa Oasis.
