Abu Dhabi's newly renovated Zayed International Airport’s Terminal A has blurred the line between a global transportation hub and a world-class luxury shopping destination. The new "Shopping Pass" campaign stands as a pioneering initiative that redefines the role of the modern travel hub.
Starting April 18, 2026, the airport has opened its airside and landside facilities to UAE nationals and residents, allowing them to experience the terminal’s premium offerings without the requirement of a boarding pass. This eight-week program marks a strategic shift for the capital’s aviation hub, transforming Terminal A into a standalone lifestyle and retail destination for the local community.
Representing a significant shift in the aviation landscape, effectively positioning itself as a hybrid between a global transit hub and a luxury retail destination, this initiative ensures the experience of Zayed International Airport's Terminal A goes beyond the ordinary. Spanning a 742,000-square-metre footprint, the terminal is designed to facilitate the movement of 45 million annual passengers while integrating a 35,000-square-metre commercial core. With 163 outlets and gourmet dining concepts, the space is engineered to meet the demands of the modern traveller, offering a seamless transition from transit to high-end lifestyle experience.
Getting to Zayed International Airport
Connectivity to the UAE capital city remains seamless, with the terminal located a mere twenty minutes from downtown Abu Dhabi and under an hour from Dubai.
This accessibility is supported by a 24/7 public transit network via bus, taxis from both Abu Dhabi and Dubai can drop passengers, whilst expansive parking facilities have been designed to handle the influx of travellers and visitors alike. So, for those not hopping on a plane, accessing this sprawling retail sanctuary is facilitated by a highly efficient, ten-minute pedestrian connection that connects the central social hubs to the departure gates.
To facilitate a seamless visit, the airport offers a significant parking incentive: visitors who spend a minimum of Dhs 200 during their stay are eligible for up to four hours of complimentary parking. This is redeemed by presenting a validated parking ticket voucher to an attendant upon exit, with any subsequent time charged at standard rates via card payment.
How can I shop in the airport without travelling?
Access to the terminal’s secure zones is managed through a streamlined digital registration process.
To shop in Terminal A, without being a travelling passenger, visitors must book a specific time slot via the airport’s official portal to receive a digital security pass equipped with a unique QR code. This pass serves as the primary credential for entry and exit at designated checkpoints. While the program offers a rare look into the heart of the terminal, certain security protocols remain in place; notably, the carriage of personal electronic devices such as laptops and tablets is strictly prohibited, and all visitors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Once inside, shopping pass holders have the opportunity to explore a curated retail landscape that features global flagships such as Bvlgari, Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, Coach, and Bottega Venetta. Passengers find themselves navigating a sophisticated circuit of boutiques including Gucci, Saint Laurent, and Ferragamo, alongside a sweeping selection of beauty and fragrance brands. The culinary offering is equally diverse, ranging from Todd English’s signature concepts to regional and international favourites like Jones the Grocer and Butler's Chocolate Cafe.
Beyond the shopping and dining opportunities, the pass allows for an up-close viewing of the airport’s architectural marvels, including the 22-metre-tall Sana Al Nour installation. One of the largest public artworks in the UAE, this 100-ton glass structure, inspired by traditional Islamic wind towers, serves as the terminal’s artistic heartbeat, filtering natural light and anchoring the "X-shaped" layout designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox, representing the city's desert, sea, city and oasis.
Does this mean I can shop tax free?
The simple answer is, unfortunately not.
While the initiative provides a gateway for non-passengers to access the luxury boutique and duty-free zones, specific commercial regulations do still apply. All purchases made by non-international travellers are subject to standard VAT percentages, and the sale of alcohol and tobacco products is restricted exclusively to passengers with a valid boarding pass.
Although some discounts and special offers do apply, you can check out the offers here.
Airports are becoming more than just transport hubs
Despite this just being an 8-week trial, the introduction of the Shopping Pass places Zayed International among an elite group of global hubs, such as Singapore’s Changi, that are rethinking the airport's purpose, beyond travel.
By opening spaces once reserved for departing passengers, Abu Dhabi is testing a new model of urban engagement, blending the prestige of international travel with the accessibility of a premium metropolitan mall. For those looking to modify their bookings or seek further information, the airport has established a dedicated support line, ensuring the eight-week campaign remains a sophisticated and well-regulated addition to the city’s social calendar.
