Doha’s independent coffee scene is strong and includes around 400 cafes across the city. In recent years, there’s been a surge in third-wave independent coffee shops with minimal decor serving flat-whites, Yemeni beans and single‑origin sourced, ethical coffee. Many coffee outlets roast their beans on site.
Traditional cardamom‑spiced Arabic coffee is still served in Majlis and markets, and the more local spots turn into fun places to kick back and relax with friends in the evening, but the third wave spots are more inclusive family-friendly places, usually suitable for brunch and remote working. These are some of our favourite places to get a brew in Doha.
1. Flat White Specialty Coffee
Founded in Doha by locals, this was the first third‑wave indie cafe in Qatar. Their namesake flat whites are smooth Aussie‑style brews. The more local El Majhool espresso comes with date syrup and the menu also invites cold brews, ginger lattes, and rotating single‑origin pour‑overs. They have a number of airy, Instagram‑worthy spaces across the capital including branches in The Pearl and Tawar Mall, which are popular among remote workers and the relaxed brunch crowd. Expect a mix of expats, creatives and families – it’s all about serious coffee and reliable Wi‑Fi.
2. NOMAD Coffee
A hidden coffee haven between Souq Waqif and Msheireb Downtown, Nomad is fully independent and Qatari‑founded. They spotlight rare Port of Mokha beans from Yemen, plus a house Nomad Signature blend scented with cinnamon and cardamom. Their cold brew, pour‑overs and even house‑made soft‑serve ice creams are a delight. The minimalist desert‑toned decor is cozy yet chic, but the limited seating makes it best for short stays. It's not a place to camp out with a laptop.
3. Cafe 42
Fully independent, born in Al Emadi Hospital’s outpatient wing and beloved by locals, Cafe 42 is known locally for its Spanish latte (espresso with condensed milk) and strong black coffee, plus V60 pour‑overs using arabica beans. Interiors are gorgeously industrial‑chic, with exposed pipes and wooden floors, plus comfy couches and a cozy living wall making it a calming spot for remote working or a bite. The menu offers sandwiches, salads, yoghurt bowls and cakes.
4. The Ministry of Coffee
A Qatar‑origin indie with a roastery located in Msheireb Downtown, The Ministry of Coffee roasts its global beans on site (and is a zero‑emissions roastery). They serve V60, cold brew, pour‑overs, plus signature seasonal blends like pumpkin spice and caramel spice. The space is bright, modern, urban with café-meets-barista studio energy. This place is loved by wellness-conscious expats and professionals and is ideal for working or meeting up with friends. There’s another branch at Marina Lusail with a gorgeous grassy deck overlooking the water, ideal for the winter months.
5. Earth Organic Coffee
Independent and wellness-first, with cafes in Msheireb downtown, Earth Organic is the first specialty coffee in Doha of its type using organic beans and plant‑based milks (think almond‑milk lattes), plus vegan cakes and healthy smoothies. Specialty brews have botanical twists like iced ‘chaispresso’ (with dates, spices and cashew milk). Calm, earthy, ultra minimal decor encourages relaxation or light working. It’s popular with vegans, families, and wellness-minded locals.
6. Volume Cafe
A fully independent Doha favourite in Qanat Quartier and Lusail Place Vendome Mall, Volume Cafe has a beautiful library area upstairs with gorgeous European decor and Venetian‑style lakeside terraces. Try the superb coffee (cappuccinos, iced classics) with the delicious house honey cake. The aesthetic is old-world soothing, ideal for cultured creatives. Upstairs is a quiet spot for working or reading.
7. Flow Specialty Coffee
A homegrown independent in a few locations, including the Mall of Qatar, this local brand is known for its ethically sourced brews, espressos, V60, cold brews, fusion iced coffees, plus in‑house soft‑serve and pastries. The decor is minimalist, cozy and warmly lit, ideal for studying, lounging or working.
8. Plan B Specialty Coffee
A local Lusail independent, the first in the Lusail Twin Towers, Plan B serves bold flavoured, home-roasted espresso classics, plus creative drinks like brulee lattes and strawberry matchas. Order with a side of French toast, zaatar babka or soft‑serve ice cream. The cafe has neutral modern interiors, terrace views, and a millennial‑friendly ambience. It’s a good casual meeting spot or place for lighter working sessions.
9. Kava Koffee
An independent Qatari‑owned roastery in Katara Cultural Village that’s rightfully famous for its cold brew in glass bottles, excellent flat whites and pastries. It’s lovingly and gorgeously decorated in a heritage-style building with a sand-coloured minimalist design, a marble countertop, and relaxed outdoor/indoor seating overlooking Katara artscape. Great vibe for art lovers, families exploring Katara, and coffee lovers looking to sample local blends. Kid-friendly.
